When a reader truly understands, it leaves me feeling rather chuffed!

"I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and am
compelled to share some kudos: (1)The story
pulls you in fast and the detail in the
writing makes you feel like you are actually there - I could see the scenery unfold before me as I read about it, down to the dust and heat. (2) I was fascinated by the Steam-punk backdrop and detail and want to know more - it added a uniqueness to the story that you won't find anywhere else. (3) I really enjoyed the characters. I pegged the main character for older than he actually is, but as you read about him, you realize that his actions relate to his age. As I learned more about his background it became obvious that he has a gritty upbringing so he is beyond his years in some ways, but not others. I enjoyed this complexity in his character. In summary - this is a great read and a totally fresh idea. My only disappointment is that I have to wait for the next installment! I can't wait to pick it up!" ~ An amazing five-star review, for which I'm exceedingly appreciative!

Second Time's a Charm!

After many months of exhausting travails regarding my lapse in judgement when choosing an agent, "Liberation at 50 Paces" is -- again -- up and running! Not only does it boast a capital new cover, thanks to the magnificent talent of Lara Eckerman, but there have been some revisions and additions made . . . you know, to make it feel like mine again. For the reference: If your publisher, agent, or representative of any kind attempts to put your prose's ISBN in his or her name, pull from your agreement forthwith. Of course, writers want to write. Period. So, when optional, we would rather leave the logistics to someone more . . . experienced. Live and learn.

Please, enjoy "Liberation" if you haven't already had the opportunity to read the novella. And if you have, I hope you delight in the much improved cover image!

I'm increasingly flattered by the comments regarding "Liberation at 50 Paces" packing a wallop within such tight confines.

"I love short stories since they are bite sized morsels of literature that I can fit into my busy schedule. This short story was a great read which managed to pack a lot of depth in without coming across as wordy or an exercise of sesquipedalian microscopic description of minutia while detracting from the larger story like so many tend to. While some of the transitions were a bit sudden, you really get drawn into the character. Without creating a spoiler I'll say that I was hoping that the story would have ended closer to Liberation, but I guess that means I'll just have to wait until the next installment of this series comes out."

Thanks a bunch, Hank!

Yes, It can be difficult to pack a punch within the limited perimeters that the novelette structure demands; and most oft, enticing descriptions are abandoned for brevity. Solid outlining, a deep-rooted connection with your characters, and puissant conflict can empower any tale with the necessitous tools needed to leap from the pages. Utilizing a lush narrative and details that provoke the senses will lend an irresistible strength to every sentence, keeping the reader wanting more of the escapism you as the author provide.

An Amazing Five-Star Review!

"We often forget about the trials and tribulations of a time not that long ago. A time, overpowered by the physical struggles of those striving to survive each day, the emotional and spiritual endurance of having to walk through the torment of the times created by social class and gender struggles. Crews carries you into this tumultuous time through the dynamics of the will of the heart, of straddling the grey zones dividing the classes, and of the complex bond between a mother, her son, and their creators.

The author places you in a fascinating steampunk setting, a world where man meets machine, where gun slinging power is lurking about, where any form of rebellion could put you one footstep closer to that ominious walk of 50 paces.

The author transports you into a world that conceals as much, if not more than it reveals, with a writing style that makes you want to savor every word. Crews paints a picture that draws you in and holds you on the edge of every turning page with a clever twist that leaves you wanting to read more novels from this author. His eloquent use of langage, character development, and plot raise the bar to new heights with this sublime novelette. Looking forward to more works from this truly talented emerging author."

One of the most amazing reviews that "Liberation" has received thus far! I find this to be utterly insightful, and it gives a glimpse into my tale that cannot be denied! The reviewer warrants a big ol' hug!

Much Obliged!

Check out what indie book reviewer, Keryl Raist, had to say in regard to Liberation at 50 Paces.

For the most part, I find Miss Raist's commentaries thorough and sagacious; this write-up is no different. Now, with that said, her "quibbles" are a trifle too personal and inconsequential for my taste, but the review is a gracious one nonetheless.

Cheers!

Press Release

Jarod D. Crews debuts his new Steampunk Western ebook, which revolves around a tale of morality and love.

-Liberation at 50 Paces is now available on iTunes, Kindle and Nook-

New author Jarod D. Crews writes about virtue, ardent romance, and greed in the new Steampunk infused Western, Liberation at 50 Paces. The story plays out in an old West mining town, which is the first rung on the ladder powering his burgeoning society of steam, iron, brass, and aether.

Crews states, “I’ve always had a soft spot for the Victorian and Edwardian vernacular and dress, as well as the general urbanity of the time period. I’ve tried to instill my characters with these attributes, while drenching the world around them in a hearty dose of industry and invention -- something very indicative of the Steampunk genre I love.“

His skills with period diction, geo-location imagery, and the rich cast of characters make this story both rollicking and enjoyable.

“Hanson’s intrinsic dilemma over slavery is the juxtaposition that frames the story,” Crews says. “His stumbling upon first-love along the way just thickens the steam, so to speak.”

Slavery in the mines and the trading of flesh divide the characters into the affected and the covetous. With airships -- or aeroships, as Jarod has dubbed them -- for the wealthy, lust, love, and gunfights in the old West, this novelette has all the classic elements readers will love.

Liberation at 50 Paces, is a prequel to the pending quartet, The Gnostic Chronicles. Jarod D. Crews lives in Richmond, Virginia, where he elates in reading any notable literature and losing himself in the craft of writing.
